Backward Mapping

Students will blog about their backward mapping experience.

Reflect on the essential questions:

1) What are the structural and systemic influences affecting life and health circumstances? and 2) What are interventions that would be equity solutions?

Post your backward map. Share your ideas and expertise with the world.

  1. 1. Structural inequities occur due to biases, socioeconomic and political drivers which implements a systemic disadvantage of a social group in comparison to other groups within society. History has shown that inequities that split groups in the past still continue in the present. These patterns affect opportunities (both life and health circumstances) for certain groups.

    2. To create a backward map (Backward Design method), we would need to 1) identify goals, objectives, and desired results 2) determine and assess evidence and 3) plan learning experiences and instructions for equity solutions. I'd also like to intertwine this with community-driven solutions per the conceptual model for promoting health equity (HEF - Health Equity implementation Framework). The framework focuses on how health outcomes are impacted by interactions between people and their environments. With the HEF construct that focuses on these drivers and follows the Backward Design method, I believe we could determine interventions that would be equity solutions. This would help ascertain the root causes of health inequity.

    1. Create an objective and goal for health equity to become a collective vision and value
    2. Implement community capacity expansion to form desired results
    3. Promote collaboration among SDoH (policies, laws, facilities, resources, support, etc.)

  2. Hi Amber, this is interesting. I like the selection of HEF as a frame. Looking forward to seeing your map! What is the topic that you will be addressing?

    1. My topic will be on systemic ableism, which has been known to also be severely connected to racism. Discrimination, racism, and historical trauma are what fuel social stratification.

  3. I chose to do my backward mapping on mental health, specifically in Black men. I chose this topic because I am currently experiencing this issue with someone very close to me. It has been a rocky road. It was my desire to see if there were some steps missed early on in this persons earlier diagnosis and if this could have been prevented. After conducting the backward mapping I found that this individual experienced a lot if not all of the precursors to developing schizophrenia. There is only up from here!!!
